Amber Heard to reprise her role as Mera in potential Aquaman sequels?
Wed November 22nd, 2023
The future of Amber Heard, who played Mera in Aquaman 3 and other DCU films, is unclear as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom gets closer to release. Additionally, it seems unlikely that Amber Heard would play Mera in any more Aquaman films, given that Jason Momoa has hinted that Aquaman 2 will be his final DCEU film and that he may be retiring from the Arthur Curry character.
Amber Heard stated in her defamation trial against Johnny Depp that she was no longer bound by her DC contract. Recasting her role was mentioned, and former DC head Walter Hamada indicated that her on-screen chemistry with Jason Momoa didn't work well. Given the DCEU's relaunch, Aquaman 3 may never happen, but if Mera is to reappear in movies down the road, it appears that her role may be recast.
A wider approach to recasting Aquaman characters is evident in the speculated casting of Jason Momoa as Lobo in James Gunn's DC Universe, in addition to Amber Heard. If Mera stays in the enlarged DCU, she might also get a new look, much like other well-known DC characters like Superman, Lois Lane, Batman, and the Flash.
The upcoming film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is scheduled for release on December 20, 2023, is probably going to provide additional light on the future of the Aquaman franchise and its characters inside the developing DC Universe.
