Set in 1960s Bombay, the film tells the story of Balraj, a street fighter/boxer. Balraj has a crush on the jazz singer Rosie, as well as a dream of becoming a "big-shot".
Balraj and his friend Chimman catch the eye of Kaizad Khambatta, who changes Balraj's name to "Johnny Balraj". Johnny opens a club, "Bombay Velvet", with the help of Kaizad, who uses the club to further his illegal tasks. Jimmy Mistri, a socialist, uses Rosie to get his hands on a photograph which Johnny uses to blackmail a minister. Rosie and Johnny fall in love and they fake Rosie's death when Kaizad orders her execution due to her affiliation with Mistri. Johnny then blackmails Kaizad for further advance in business. Kaizad, in turn, orders Johnny's execution, but Chimman is killed in the attack. Kaizad then abducts Rosie, luring Johnny. In a struggle, both Rosie and Johnny are wounded, while Kaizad is killed. Johnny is eventually killed by the police while Rosie survives.
